Application trial before injection

The trial section must establish whether material reaches the right zone and whether injection can be controlled. Trial results form the basis of the subsequent method.

Preparation and control of repeatable drilling — Fig.30.

Start with the question you want to resolve

A method trial checks assumptions before extending the works. It may confirm borehole geometry, spacing, face sealing, material selection or structural response. In this article, “pre-injection” means such a trial. Stopping an active leak is a different task, although it may form part of the method being tested.

Select a section representative of the problem and access conditions. If the structure has different substrates, water pressures or cross-sections, one successful trial is insufficient to justify common parameters for every zone.

READING THE CROSS-SECTION

What does the diagram show?

The trial section checks borehole geometry, communication and material behaviour. The photograph shows actual drilling angle, height and depth checks; its accompanying text relates the target layout to an earlier trial result. It is not a separate plugging diagram.

Angle gauge at the drill

Checking the actual drilling angle helps consistently reproduce geometry confirmed in the trial.

Laser line

Establishes a common borehole level so subsequent points match the set-out layout.

Depth marking on the drill bit

Allows hole length to be monitored during drilling. The photograph concerns preparation and repeatable drilling, not a separate plugging method.

Establish four things before mixing

Target zone

Mark on the cross-section where material must remain and which spaces should communicate. Distinguish the crack, joint, masonry interior and ground.

Injection and observation points

Identify where you pump, where you observe and how successive points will be closed. Mark expected escape locations and how material will be collected.

Material and its working window

Establish the variant, temperature, preparation and pumping method. Plan batch size and flushing during breaks and after work, according to material instructions, before residues set in the system.

Completion and stopping conditions

Define signals of expected progress and events requiring a stop. For ground and support work, add displacement measurements; for sealing, inspection of adjacent water paths.

Change one assumption and observe the effect

Set out holes, drill them consistently and record actual geometry. After cleaning and installing packers, start gentle injection. Observe pressure, quantity, time, communication and substrate behaviour together. Water used to check passage does not reproduce all properties of the selected resin.

If the result differs from expectations, first identify the cause. A missed hole, blocked valve, escaping material and excessively short reaction time may all produce a similar lack of progress. Changing several parameters at once makes it difficult to establish which adjustment worked.

Communication is information, not the whole result

Material appearing at the next point confirms communication. It does not establish complete filling of the entire zone. Compare it with uptake, time, discharge paths and repair conditions. A pressure reading alone does not confirm coverage.

Stop work for a sudden pressure rise without uptake, uncontrolled escape, packer movement or an unintended structural response. Before disconnecting, depressurise the system according to equipment instructions. Resume after identifying and removing the cause.

Apply the procedure on site together with its limitations

Trial results should include the actual cross-section, material and formulation, temperatures, point geometry, injection method, quantity range and inspection criteria. Add observations of unintended discharges and adjustments. Repeating the dosage alone without repeating conditions does not reproduce the method.

Establish which deviation during subsequent works will trigger a new trial. This may be a different substrate layer, changed inflow, a large uptake increase or lack of communication. Acceptance of the trial and acceptance of the entire repair remain separate stages.

RESINBAU SELECTION

Site conditions determine the material

CrackFlex →

Trial of flexible crack or joint sealing; confirm material retention conditions and injection time.

HydroGum →

Trial in a zone with water needed for the reaction, assessing material path and confinement of expansion.

Discuss your project conditions

Prepare a cross-section, a description of water and movement, and results of previous trials. ResinBau helps select the material and application method.
